J:  The ever-resourceful Mia just sent me a list of new books that we might want to read together and discuss here. As it happens, my older daughter just flew through one of those books: THE RED UMBRELLA, by Christina Diaz Gonzalez.  So, while Mia and I work on our next collective post, I asked Emily if she’d share her recommendation with everyone.  Here it is:

 

E:  THE RED UMBRELLA is about a teenage girl named Lucia and her little brother, Frankie. Lucia and Frankie lived in Cuba when Fidel Castro was in power. They go on with their normal lives until the soldiers come to their town. Since their parents are anti-communists, they are in a lot of danger.  It is extra-hard for Lucia because her best friend is a communist. When Lucia’s dad gets arrested, it pushes her parents to send her and Frankie to America. They have to grow accustomed to life in America and hope that their parents are okay.

 

I liked THE RED UMBRELLA because it was suspenseful. I enjoyed watching Lucia and Frankie make new friends in America and lose some old ones along the way. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes historical fiction, or just a book about a kid’s daily life.
